Itinerary 4: Saint-Germain-des-Prés, the Organic Market
and the Bouquinistes*

Take the 95 bus to the Saint-Germain-des-Prés stop near the church by the same name and wander around all those streets: rue Visconti, a picturesque narrow street where a number of famous people have lived, and rue Bonaparte, a street with wonderful antique shops. Visit the Eglise Saint-Germain, one of the oldest churches in Paris; see the gardens and the Rue Viscontipark. Consider sitting in one of the famous cafés, either Les Deux Magots or le Café de Flore, to people-watch. Both of these cafés are right across the street from the church and near the bus stop.

Then walk all the way to the Seine on Rue Bonaparte, past the famous Rue des Beaux-Arts and stroll along the river. See what treasures you can find at the bouquinistes (the bookstalls) — in A booksellerCharade, this is where Cary Grant and Audrey Hepburn discovered some precious stamps, intrigue and romance. If you want to find the 95 bus coming back in the other direction, you can find it one street over on rue des Saints-Pères, also a great browsing street.

Or you can catch the 95 or 96 bus in front of the Monoprix store on rue de Rennes after you cross Boulevard St-Germain. Take the bus to Boulevard Raspail. There is an outdoor morning market there on Tuesdays through Friday. On Sunday mornings it is the best organic market.

Church of St. GermainHowever, perhaps you do not want to go to the outdoor market and would prefer going to some large department stores. Two of them are right near each other on the Right Bank. You can catch the 95 bus again in front of the St-Germain Church, enjoy the Seine as you ride across it, see the Louvre, the Opera, and go all the way to the stop Havre-Haussmann. You will not want to miss Les Galeries Lafayette and Au Printemps if you like shopping. A very good self-service lunch spot is on the 6th floor of Les Galeries Lafayette with a view toward the back of the Opéra and over Paris rooftops.   Au Printemps is equally agreeable for lunch.
